Lasting Bands

Cultivators of the earth are the most valuable citizens.
They are the most vigorous, the most independant, the most virtuous,
and they are tied to their country and wedded to it’s liberty and interests by the most lasting bands

- Thomas Jefferson

The Next Hill

Some of us are timid.
We think we have something to lose
So we don’t try for that next hill

Atmosphere of Life

For me, a landscape does not exist in its own right, since its appearance changes at every moment; but the surrounding atmosphere brings it to life – the light and the air which vary continually. For me, it is only the surrounding atmosphere which gives subjects their true value.

Imagination Through The Fog

The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity… and some scarce see nature at all.
But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself

On The Threshold

Never have I found the limits of the photographic potential.
Every horizon, upon being reached, reveals another beckoning in the distance.
Always, I am on the threshold.

Looming Dogma

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.
Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.
Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice.
And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.
They somehow already know what you truly want to become.
Everything else is secondary.

Golden Moment

To the attentive eye, each moment of the year has its own beauty,
and in the same field, it beholds, every hour,
a picture which was never seen before, and which shall never be seen again

Imminent

The creative act lasts but a brief moment,
a lightning instant of give-and-take,
just long enough for you to level the camera
and to trap the fleeting prey in your little box.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin

No stream rises higher than its source.
What ever man might build could never express or reflect more than he was.
He could record neither more nor less than he had learned of life when the buildings were built.

Today is Frank Lloyd Wright’s 142nd birthday.

I had the privilege to photograph Wright’s Spring Green, Wisconsin home and studio in April of this year, shooting reference photos for a ZD Studios project.

ZD Studios (a Madison EGD firm that I work for) created an incredible 3D film of Taliesin for a May event at the Guggenheim celebrating the 50th anniversary of Wright’s death. The film depicts Taliesin as it was in 1959, the year Wright died. It is currently on display at the Guggenheim.
