2009 Challenge 80/365 – Animal or Pet

This is my first Photo Challenge photo in almost a month. I want to get re-involved in the daily challenge… it got me taking photos I wouldn’t have otherwise taken and I had to do a lot of experimentation with lighting and set up. Good stuff.

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM is probably the most versatile lens in my bag.
• Macro (obviously)
• Landscape (comes in handy until I get my 70-200 fixed)
• Portrait lens (as demonstrated here)

Because of the 100mm focal length, I get better portrait bokeh results than with my 50mm f/1.4 and because it’s a macro lens, the minimal focusing distance is 12″ allowing me to get a lot closer to the subject.

When using it as a telephoto, I do give up sharpness and image quality over a traditional telephoto. Still, it’s the longest lens in my bag at the moment, so it’s getting an “it’ll do” image over getting no image at all.

I think it’s a must-have lens, especially for the ~$400 price tag.

I have created a set of photos I have taken with this lens on Flickr – head over there if you have time and take a look at the range of shots. •Flickr set here

  1. Marvelous cat photo. Those eyes–I can’t stop looking into them! I wish I could purchase that lens, (I shoot Nikon) but then its the photographer behind the lens that makes the difference as you have clearly demonstrated here.
